Royal Palace of Naples

The Royal Palace of Naples is one of the four residences used by the royal house of the Bourbons of Naples during the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies; the other three are the palace of Capodimonte located north of the historic center, the palace of Caserta and the palace of Portici on the slopes of Vesuvius.

The project dates back to Domenico Fontana in 1600; in the eighteenth century Luigi Vanvitelli, following static problems, alternately closed the arches of the facade, to strengthen the wall structures.

Damaged by a fire in 1837, the Palace was restored by Gaetano Genovese, author of the monumental staircase and the arrangement of the southern side of the Palace, with the Belvedere courtyard and the hanging garden. The oldest rooms on the main floor, now the Historic Apartment Museum, preserve the furnishings and decorations of the royal families: the Court Theatre, the splendid Ambassadors' Room, the Throne Room, the Hercules Room, the Chapel Palatine dedicated to the Assumption

Of considerable size, the palace majestically overlooks the monumental area of Piazza del Plebiscito and is surrounded by other important and imposing buildings such as the Salerno palace, the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola and the Prefecture palace.

Entrance fee to the site not included in the cost of the guide service.
